Gardner-Webb vs. Georgia Tech

Saturday. October 11, 2008.

Gardner-Webb comes to Atlanta to face the Jackets. We were originally going to face Army but they exercised their option to remove us from their schedule. If I had to guess (and I do), I would say that Army did not want to lose to Paul Johnson and Navy separately in the same season. Therefore they dumped our game to focus on losing to Navy.

Here is what you may not know about our opponent: (1) they are located about 50 miles west of Charlotte, (2) approximately 4,000 students are enrolled at the school, (3) they will lose this game by no less than 40 points.

Tech is coming off of a strong performance against Duke last week when our defense was able to shut out the Blue Devils. This season the defense, specifically the defensive line, is getting more attention than our new offense which is a good thing. The rest of our schedule will be more difficult with Clemson, FSU, Miami, UNC and UGA. The coaching staff will make sure that we focus on fundamentals this week.

QB Josh Nesbitt has reportedly returned to practice. We will not need him for this game but the coaching staff will want to make sure that he is ready for Clemson the following week. I do not expect to see too much of him in this game if at all.

The game is at 3:30 pm which is a surprise. Most of our games this season have been at noon. Typically the more competitive and higher profile teams play later. With that in mind, I would have thought that this game would have been closer to 9 am. I hope that everyone attending will take advantage of the additional time to tailgate.

Line: none

Prediction: The coaching staff will be preaching fundamentals. The most exciting part of the game will be watching Coach Johnson get in the face of any player that makes a mental mistake such as a false start. Otherwise this will be a yawner. Bourbon anyone? Tech 56 – GWebb 3.
